Wildlife in the Mentawai:
A Rare Encounter with Unique Species

Beyond perfect waves and lush nature, Akua Villas Mentawai offers a rare and unforgettable experience: the chance to observe endemic monkey species, found nowhere else in the world — right from the balcony of your bungalow.

Nestled in the native forest of Sipora Island, in the Tuapejat region, our elevated bungalows offer a privileged view of the surrounding wildlife. It’s common to spot, especially during early mornings or late afternoons, the iconic Bilou (or Bilout) and Joja monkeys swinging through the trees or feeding in the canopy.

The Bilout

The Bilout, also known as the Kloss’s Gibbon (Hylobates klossii), is one of the world’s rarest gibbon species. With its dark fur and silent, graceful movements, it’s a magical sight to behold.

The Joja

The Joja, a lesser-known Mentawai monkey, is also exclusive to this region. It’s recognized for its social behavior and distinctive vocalizations, making each encounter truly special.

A Sensory Journey Through the Forest

At Akua Villas Mentawai, we offer our guests a unique opportunity: guided walks along a secluded path deep in the native jungle, led by an experienced local guide born and raised in the region.

As you walk through the forest trails, you’ll be surrounded by the sounds of wildlife, the earthy scent of the tropical vegetation, and dappled sunlight filtering through the treetops. It’s a truly immersive, sensory journey into the wild heart of Mentawai.
